World caf\ue9 method to engage smart energy-district project partners in assessing urban co-benefits
Urban energy-district projects introduce outstanding technological innovation in buildings and energy systems increasing sustainability in city neighborhoods. Such projects generate additional co-benefits for the city beyond changes in physical elements and development of social and institutional relationships (e.g. local employment, environmental quality, public health, property values, innovation attitude, etc.). Since exceeding main declared goals or not always clearly foreseen in the early project phase, these co-benefits are often not properly understood and considered. However, only their explicit recognition will make possible their inclusion in the assessment of the whole project\u2019s performance. From these considerations, this study faces the issue of engaging project partners in assessing co-benefits in order to consider a broad spectrum of relevant, positive effects in the evaluation process. Group knowledge and group thinking of this complex topic are investigated through the world caf\ue9 method, providing an atmosphere of trust and open discussions among participants. This empirical work lays the foundations to go beyond the mere economic measure as the sole criterion for assessing project effects, also including changes in end-user behavior and intangible asset
Standardising terminology and notation for the analysis of demographic processes in marked populations
The development of statistical methods for the analysis of demographic processes in marked animal populations has brought with it the challenges of communication between the disciplines of statistics, ecology, evolutionary biology and computer science. In order to aid communication and comprehension, we sought to root out a number of cases of ambiguity, redundancy and inaccuracy in notation and terminology that have developed in the literature. We invited all working in this field to submit topics for resolution and to express their own views. In the ensuing discussion forum it was then possible to establish a series of general principles which were, almost without exception, unanimously accepted. Here we set out the background to the areas of confusion, how these were debated and the conclusions which were reached in each case. Sustained release silk fibroin discs: Antibody and protein delivery for HIV prevention
With almost 2 million new HIV infections worldwide each year, the prevention of HIV infection is critical for stopping the pandemic. The only approved form of pre-exposure prophylaxis is a costly daily pill, and it is recognized that several options will be needed to provide protection to the various affected communities around the world. In particular, many at-risk people would benefit from a prevention method that is simple to use and does not require medical intervention or a strict daily regimen. We show that silk fibroin protein can be formulated into insertable discs that encapsulate either an antibody (IgG) or the potent HIV inhibitor 5P12-RANTES. Several formulations were studied, including silk layering, water vapor annealing and methanol treatment to stabilize the protein cargo and impact the release kinetics over weeks. In the case of IgG, high concentrations were released over a short time using methanol treatment, with more sustained results with the use of water vapor annealing and layering during device fabrication. For 5P12-RANTES, sustained release was obtained for 31âŻdays using water vapor annealing. Further, we show that the released inhibitor 5P12-RANTES was functional both in vitro and in ex vivo colorectal tissue. The OPERA trial : a protocol for the process evaluation of a randomised trial of an exercise intervention for older people in residential and nursing accommodation
Background: The OPERA trial is large cluster randomised trial testing a physical activity intervention to address
depression amongst people living in nursing and residential homes for older people. A process evaluation was
commissioned alongside the trial and we report the protocol for this process evaluation. Challenges included the
cognitive and physical ability of the participants, the need to respect the privacy of all home residents, including
study non-participants, and the physical structure of the homes. Evaluation activity had to be organised around the
structured timetable of homes, leaving limited opportunities for data collection. The aims of this process evaluation
are to provide findings that will assist in the interpretation of the clinical trial results, and to inform potential
implementation of the physical activity intervention on a wider scale.
Methods/design: Quantitative data on recruitment of homes and individuals is being collected. For homes in the
intervention arm, data on dose and fidelity of the intervention delivered; including individual rates of participation
in exercise classes are collected. In the control homes, uptake and delivery of depression awareness training is
monitored. These data will be combined with qualitative data from an in-depth study of a purposive sample of
eight homes (six intervention and two control).
Discussion: Although process evaluations are increasingly funded alongside trials, it is still rare to see the findings
published, and even rarer to see the protocol for such an evaluation published. Process evaluations have the
potential to assist in interpreting and understanding trial results as well as informing future roll-outs of
interventions. If such evaluations are funded they should also be reported and reviewed in a similar way to the
trial outcome evaluation
Mixture models for distance sampling detection functions
Funding: EPSRC DTGWe present a new class of models for the detection function in distance sampling surveys of wildlife populations, based on finite mixtures of simple parametric key functions such as the half-normal. The models share many of the features of the widely-used âkey function plus series adjustmentâ (K+A) formulation: they are flexible, produce plausible shapes with a small number of parameters, allow incorporation of covariates in addition to distance and can be fitted using maximum likelihood. One important advantage over the K+A approach is that the mixtures are automatically monotonic non-increasing and non-negative, so constrained optimization is not required to ensure distance sampling assumptions are honoured. We compare the mixture formulation to the K+A approach using simulations to evaluate its applicability in a wide set of challenging situations. We also re-analyze four previously problematic real-world case studies. We find mixtures outperform K+A methods in many cases, particularly spiked line transect data (i.e., where detectability drops rapidly at small distances) and larger sample sizes. We recommend that current standard model selection methods for distance sampling detection functions are extended to include mixture models in the candidate set.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Differential cell autonomous responses determine the outcome of coxsackievirus infections in murine pancreatic ι and β cells

Available from eLife Sciences Publications via the DOI in this record.Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease caused by loss of pancreatic β cells via apoptosis while neighboring Îą cells are preserved. Viral infections by coxsackieviruses (CVB) may contribute to trigger autoimmunity in T1D. Cellular permissiveness to viral infection is modulated by innate antiviral responses, which vary among different cell types. We presently describe that global gene expression is similar in cytokine-treated and virus-infected human islet cells, with up-regulation of gene networks involved in cell autonomous immune responses. Comparison between the responses of rat pancreatic Îą and β cells to infection by CVB5 and 4 indicate that Îą cells trigger a more efficient antiviral response than β cells, including higher basal and induced expression of STAT1-regulated genes, and are thus better able to clear viral infections than β cells. Obstructive sleep apnoea: a cause of chronic cough
Chronic cough is a common reason for presentation to both general practice and respiratory clinics. In up to 25% of cases, the cause remains unclear after extensive investigations. We report 4 patients presenting with an isolated chronic cough who were subsequently found to have obstructive sleep apnoea. The cough improved rapidly with nocturnal continuous positive airway pressure therapy. Further studies are required to investigate the prevalence of coexistence of these common conditions
Adapting a Program to Inform African American and Hispanic American Women About Cancer Clinical Trials
The dearth of evidence-based clinical trial education programs may contribute to the underrepresentation of African American and Hispanic American women in cancer research studies. This study used focus group-derived data from 80 women distributed among eight Spanish- and English-language focus groups. These data guided the researchersâ adaptation and refinement of the National Cancer Instituteâs various clinical trials education programs into a program that was specifically focused on meeting the information needs of minority women and addressing the barriers to study participation that they perceived. A âsisterhoodâ theme was adopted and woven throughout the presentation
